Streaks after a ceramic coating can be caused by residues that were not fully removed, by later care products or by water and dirt deposits. The key is when they appear. Directly during application, you can carefully remove fresh excess within the specified time window. Cured coating residues, on the other hand, require a different approach.
Before you apply more pressure or reach for a cleaner, assess the area. We’ll show you the process for our Final PRO and explain when you should leave the correction to a professional detailer.
Are they streaks or so-called high spots?
High spots are areas where excess coating has not been removed evenly. They can look like darker wipe marks, cloudy patches or iridescent spots. They are particularly noticeable in side lighting. Their appearance is a clue, but does not by itself prove the cause.
- Directly after application: First check whether there is still excess product on the surface and whether your removal towel has already absorbed too much coating.
- Only visible the next day: A spot missed during application may now be significantly harder to correct. Do not simply re-wipe with more pressure.
- Only after washing or using a detailer: Shampoo, care product or cloth residues are also possible. In this case, first gently clean a fully cured coating.
Check from several angles and with a suitable light source. Scratches and polishing holograms under a coating won’t disappear by simply wiping again. If you find these, our guide Removing holograms helps you assess the situation.
Remove fresh streaks with Final PRO
For Final PRO: Wipe off excess roughly 3 minutes after application with a soft 300 GSM microfiber towel without pressure. Check immediately. Visible high spots can be removed by light re-wiping for up to about 10 minutes after application. This inspection window is not a reason to delay the regular wipe-off.
Work with clean, soft towels and switch to a fresh side or a new towel as soon as removal is no longer clean. Our 300 GSM coating microfiber towels are ideal for this. A saturated towel tends to spread excess product rather than reliably absorb it.
If a spot can no longer be leveled out cleanly despite careful re-wiping, don’t increase pressure and don’t experiment with solvents. If in doubt, you can try going over it again with fresh coating and the applicator; for a certain time this can soften and reduce streaks. But be careful: this short correction window is not the same as the multi-day curing process.
What helps with already cured high spots?
Cured excess coating is not normal dirt. A shampoo or detailer will not remove it. On suitable glossy paint, controlled abrasive correction with an appropriate polish may be necessary. In the process, the coating in the treated area is also removed or weakened and must then be rebuilt.
Don’t just automatically choose the sharpest polish. A detailer tests a small spot to see what level of correction is sufficient and how to achieve an even result. After correction, follow up with suitable cleaning and degreasing and then rebuild the protection according to the product instructions. You’ll find more on choosing a polish under Which polish before ceramic coating?.
Do not simply polish matte paint and matte films. This can permanently alter the appearance. Have high spots assessed individually in these cases. How Final PRO is used on matte paint is explained in Ceramic coating for matte paint.
Our Ultra Degreaser is used to prepare suitable surfaces before coating. It is not a universal remover for fully cured ceramic coatings. Adding another layer of Final PRO or a detailer is also not a reliable fix for high spots.
What to do about streaks after washing or using a detailer?
If the ceramic coating is fully cured and the marks only appeared after maintenance, start with a gentle wash. Use a suitable shampoo such as our Wash & Foam car shampoo, rinse thoroughly and dry with clean, absorbent towels. If the marks remain unchanged, the cause needs to be examined more closely.
With a detailer, too much product, an unsuitable surface or incomplete wipe-off can all impair the result. Follow its instructions for further treatment. A compatible detailer is a useful maintenance add-on, but it should not be used to cover up unexplained spots.
If you see more individual edges than wipe marks, read removing water spots from ceramic coatings. Such deposits require a different treatment than cured coating residues.
How do you avoid streaks when applying a coating?
Prepare all towels and your inspection light before application. For Final PRO we recommend a dry, clean and well-ventilated work area at +15 to +25 °C. No hot panels and no direct sunlight. On paint, start with areas of around 60 × 60 cm and only work as large as you can confidently apply, wipe off and inspect.
Spread a small amount of product evenly, work with a single layer and check each section immediately. Pay special attention to excess product on edges and transitions. Observe the safety measures and compatibility test from the instructions. You’ll also find the coating and accessories in the Final PRO Ceramic Coating Kit.
After application, the vehicle needs rest: At approx. 20 °C (68 °F), Final PRO is water-resistant and ready to drive after about 12 hours, and fully cured and washable after 5 days. Times may vary depending on climate. The complete process is described in Letting ceramic coatings cure: rain and the first wash. You’ll find more accessories in our ceramic coating category.
Frequently asked questions
Do high spots disappear on their own?
Do not rely on that. Check visible excess product directly during application and correct it within the specified time window. If it has already cured, a targeted assessment is necessary.
Can I still simply wipe it off after 24 hours?
With Final PRO, the early inspection window is long gone by then. Don’t rub harder and don’t use cleaners at random. Clarify any remaining conspicuous spot with us or a professional detailer.
Does the entire car need to be recoated?
Not automatically. The required level of correction depends on the findings. Wherever the coating has been removed or weakened by polishing, the protection must be rebuilt.
Can I polish out high spots on matte paint?
No, that is not a suitable standard correction. Polishing can create shiny spots and permanently alter the matte appearance. Have the area assessed by a professional.
