Cleaning Alcantara: how to properly clean seats and covers

Clean Alcantara with minimal moisture, a soft clean scrub pad and gentle residue removal. First remove loose dirt. Then carefully clean the affected area and only assess it when it is completely dry. Vigorous scrubbing is not a shortcut to a better result!

Alcantara is not leather but a synthetic microfiber material with a fine nap. This nap – the fine fibers on the surface – determines the soft feel and influences how light or dark an area appears. Leather grease or leather care products therefore do not belong on an Alcantara cover.

Is it really Alcantara – and what is actually dirty?

Check your vehicle’s equipment: a velour-like appearance alone does not identify the material. Other microfiber materials and genuine suede can look similar. 

With seats, material combinations are also common. The seat center may be Alcantara, the side bolsters leather or synthetic leather. Clean each surface appropriately without wetting the neighboring area with an unsuitable product.

• Dust and loose particles: First remove them dry and gently.
• Widespread dirt or greasy areas: Clean a small test area, wipe it off, and compare when dry.
• Single spot: If possible, determine the cause first. A drink ring does not necessarily need the same treatment as paint or adhesive.
• Little knots, thin or bare spots: here the material itself has changed. Cleaning does not replace missing fibers.

Which tools are useful?

You’ll need a very soft, clean brush or the more modern option, a scrub pad, a suitable vacuum attachment, soft towels and clean water.

Cleaning Alcantara seats and covers: a practical step-by-step process

1. Inspect the dry initial condition

Inspect the area under even lighting. Gently stroke the pile in one direction: some of the light–dark variation may be caused solely by the fiber direction. 

2. Gently remove loose particles

Carefully vacuum with a suitable soft attachment or remove dust with a very soft brush. Do not drag a hard nozzle with pressure across the upholstery. Work gently around seams.

3. Test an inconspicuous area

Test your planned cleaning method on a small inconspicuous area. After drying, check the colour and surface texture. A test on wet material does not yet show you what the upholstery will look like later.

4. Work with minimal moisture

For light, superficial soiling, start with a soft cloth, slightly dampened with clean water and well wrung out. For heavier dirt, use Leather Soft Cleaner according to its instructions. Depending on the situation, apply it to the scrub pad or your very soft brush and work manageable areas evenly. Avoid wet spots and soaking the padding.

5. Pick up dirt and residue

Pick up loosened dirt with a fresh section of the towel. If necessary, follow up with a clean towel lightly dampened with clear water. Change sides before you drag the collected dirt back onto the surface. Do not scrub vigorously or force the pile against resistance.

6. Let it dry completely and reassess

Let the surface air-dry in good ventilation. Don’t use steam or hot air to speed up the process. Then gently lift the dry pile with a very soft brush. Compare the same area under the same light and with a similar fiber direction.

Correctly identifying stains, water spots and greasy patches

If the mishap is fresh, first absorb the liquid with a clean, absorbent cloth without rubbing it in, then carefully clean the area with a clean, soft microfiber cloth.

If rings appear after drying, uneven or excessive wetting or remaining residues may be involved. Don’t immediately soak the area again. Check the entire affected upholstery section and how you have used the product so far; for large rings or unknown previous treatments, professional textile cleaning by a detailer is advisable.

Greasy-looking areas can contain deposits and flattened fibres. If a careful first pass brings hardly any improvement, that does not automatically mean you should work more aggressively. Stop if you see colour transfer, fibre changes or increasing roughness. We do not casually treat pilling – small fibre balls – with razors or abrasives.

What is pilling on Alcantara?

Pilling refers to small fiber balls on the surface. They are caused by friction: fine fibers work loose from the pile and tangle together. This can occur through normal use; vigorous scrubbing or stiff brushes can further promote the effect.

The little nodules are not dirt that you can simply clean away. Do not increase pressure or the number of cleaning passes. Also do not resort to razors or abrasives on your own. If there is significant pilling or thin spots, have a specialist familiar with Alcantara assess the cover.

Frequently asked questions

Can I treat Alcantara with leather care products?

Not with a regular leather conditioner just to be safe. Alcantara is a textile material. Oily or film-forming care products can change its feel and appearance.

Is water enough for cleaning?

For light everyday marks, a gentle approach with a slightly damp cloth may be sufficient. For stubborn stains, the right cleaner depends on the material approval and the type of contamination.

May I use a steam cleaner?

Not for the care routine described here. We work with controlled moisture and soft tools; the material manufacturer advises against steam devices.

Can I wash the seat cover in the washing machine?

Not just because the material is Alcantara. An installed car seat and its upholstery form a complete system. Only remove and machine-wash it if the vehicle or upholstery manufacturer explicitly allows this.

Why does the cleaned area look darker?

Moisture and a different nap direction change the appearance. Let it dry completely and compare in the same direction. If the difference remains, do not clean more aggressively without further checks.
