A wash brush cover can reduce direct contact between the bristles and the paint. It only works properly with a thorough pre-wash and a clean cover, however. Sand trapped beneath or within the microfibre can still cause scratches. Inspect the entire brush before using it on your car with a cover.
What can a brush cover actually do?
You work with a softer contact surface instead of the bristles directly. This is a practical option if a wash brush is part of your routine at a suitable washing facility. A cover is not a filter that reliably keeps every foreign particle away from the paint.
The microfibre also picks up dirt during washing. The cleaner the paint is before contact, and the more often you rinse the cover, the better the conditions for a gentle wash. Neither a cover nor a wash mitt can guarantee scratch-free washing.
When should you avoid using the brush?
- If sand, grit or hard residue remains on the head.
- If the brush is damaged or exposed hard edges could touch the paint.
- If the cover slips off or does not securely cover all the bristles.
- If heavy contamination remains on the paint after the pre-wash.
- If the operator does not allow a cover.
In these cases, an authorised hand wash with a clean wash mitt is the better option. If that is also unavailable at the facility, use a touchless rinse as an interim clean and carry out a thorough contact wash later at a suitable location.
How to fit and use the Brush Cover
- Pre-wash the vehicle: Thoroughly rinse off loose and heavy dirt before the brush touches the paint.
- Inspect the brush and cover: Both must be free of foreign particles. Do not use the cover to conceal a dirty brush.
- Fit the cover: Cover the entire brush head, tighten the fastening appropriately and tuck it inside. Check that hard parts and bristles cannot make direct contact.
- Fully wet the cover: Use plenty of wash solution. Never move a dry cover across the paint.
- Guide it gently: Start at the top, wash small sections and apply very little pressure. Rinse the cover regularly and inspect it for newly trapped particles.
- Keep tasks separate: Do not use the same contact surface on wheels and wheel arches and then on the paint.
- Rinse: Thoroughly remove loosened dirt and wash solution, then dry the clean paint.
How do you know when to change it?
Stop if coarse particles become trapped, the fibres are visibly heavily soiled or the wash solution no longer flows through properly. Rinse, inspect and use a fresh cover if needed. More pressure will not solve the problem.
If the cover falls on the ground, do not simply carry on using it. Inspect and clean it thoroughly. If any doubt remains, keep it away from the paint for the rest of that wash. For the complete programme sequence, see The right order at a self-service car wash.
Caring for the cover afterwards
Remove the Brush Cover from the brush, rinse it out and wash it at up to 30 °C without fabric softener. Then let it air-dry completely and store it clean. A damp cover crumpled in the boot is poor preparation for the next wash.
Keep heavily soiled wash textiles separate from glass and coating towels. For textile care, see How to wash microfibre towels. How to wash your car and Drying a car without water spots explain the steps before and after using the brush.
Frequently asked questions
Does a cover prevent every scratch?
No. Dirt within the cover, beneath it or on the paint can still leave marks. A thorough pre-wash, clean equipment and very little pressure remain essential.
Does the Brush Cover fit every brush?
The fastening is adjustable. Shapes and sizes vary; check full coverage and a secure fit before use.
Can I wash the wheels first and then the paint with it?
Not with the same contaminated contact surface. Keep the tasks separate so coarse wheel dirt does not reach the paint.
What washing temperature can I use for the cover?
Up to 30 °C without fabric softener. Afterwards, let it air-dry completely.
